Family Storytime: Lunar New Year (Dragon)!

HCPL - Storytime

This week’s storytime we are celebrating Lunar New Year! This year will be the Year of the Dragon. Here are some wonderful books we might read in storytime:

The Tray of Togetherness by Flo Leung

Red is a Dragon: A Book of Colors written by Roseanne Thong, illustrated by Grace Lin

Chloe’s Lunar New Year by Lily LaMotte, illustrated by Michelle Lee

12 Lucky Animals: A Bilingual Baby Book by Vickie Lee, illustrated by Joey Chou

Here are some songs and/or rhymes we might do in storytime:

Rhyme: Swing Your Dragon Tail
Turn around once and swing your dragon tail,
Turn around twice, flap your wings, and shake your scales,
Turn around three times, stomp your feet and roar,
Jump up high then sit down on the floor.

Flannel: 5 Little Dragons (tune: 5 Little Ducks)
5 little dragons went out one day,
Over the hills and far away,
Mother dragon said, “It’s time for your snack,”
And only four little dragons came back.

Repeat until none, then:
No little dragons went out one day,
Over the hills and far away,
Mother dragon said, “It’s a really good snack!”
And five little dragons came roaring back!

Song: Dragon Dance (tune: Mary Had a Little Lamb)
See the dragon hop, hop, hop.
Hop, hop, hop. Hop, hop, hop.
See the dragon hop, hop, hop,
On Lunar New Year’s Day!

Verses: shake its tail… dance around… stomp its feet… jump up and down… go to sleep…

Song: If You’re a Dragon and You Know It
If you’re a dragon and you know it, show your claws.
If you’re a dragon and you know it, show your claws.
If you’re a dragon and you know it, and you really want to show it,
If you’re a dragon and you know it, show your claws.

Verses: wiggle your tails… breathe out fire… ask them for other dragon traits and make up your own!

See you there!
