Family Storytime: Flowers!

HCPL - Storytime

This week’s storytime theme is “flowers”! Here are some wonderful books we might read in storytime and our recommendations for you to read at home:

The Hidden Rainbow by Christie Matheson

What Will Grow? by Jennifer Ward, illustrated by Susie Ghahremani

Bears and Blossoms by Shirley Parenteau, illustrated by David Walker

Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert

Plant the Tiny Seed by Christie Matheson

Here are some songs and/or rhymes we might do in storytime:

Get Ready Song: If You’re Ready for a Story, Clap Your Hands (tune: If You’re Happy and You Know It)
If you’re ready for a story, clap your hands
If you’re ready for a story, clap your hands
If you’re ready for a story, if you’re ready for a story,
If you’re ready for a story, clap your hands

Hello song: Clap Everybody and Say Hello
Clap everybody and say “hello”
Clap everybody and say “hello”
Clap everybody and say “hello”
No matter what the weather!

Verses: For May we are learning how to say hello in Polish which is “Cześć! (Chesh-ch)”! Then we repeat again with the signs for clap, hello, and weather.

Song: Planting Time (tune: Row, Row, Row Your Boat)
Dig, dig, dig the earth,                    (pretend to dig)
Then you plant the seeds,              (pretend to plant)
A gentle rain,                                   (wiggle fingers down)
The bright sunshine,                       (circle arms overhead)
And flowers you will see.               (open arms wide)

Rhyme: Five Little Flowers
Five little flowers growing in a row
The first one said, “We need rain to grow”
The second one said, “Yes, we need water!”
The third one said, “Whew, it’s getting hotter!”
The fourth one said, “Look, there are clouds in the sky.”
The fifth said, “I wonder why?”
Then “BOOM” went the thunder,
And “ZAP” went the lightning.
That springtime storm was kind of frightening.
But were the flowers scared? No, no, no.
They needed to grow, grow, grow.

Rhyme: Little Flower, Little Flower
Little flower, little flower, twist around.
Little flower, little flower, planted in the ground.
Little flower, little flower, spread your petals wide.
Little flower, little flower, now you hide.
Little flower, little flower, stretch towards the sun.
Little flower, little flower, in the wind, have fun!
Little flower, little flower, no more light.
Little flower, little flower, say good night.

Song: I’m a Little Tulip (tune: I’m a Little Teapot)
I’m a little tulip,
On my stem,                                                       (raise arms high)
Here are my green leaves,
See how they bend,                                           (bend forearms)
A tulip all alone
Might droop its head,                                        (bow head down)
But I am happy ‘cause I’m in a flower bed!    (raise head and arms then smile)

Shake My Sillies Out by Raffi
I’m gonna shake, shake, shake my sillies out,
Shake, shake, shake my sillies out,
Shake, shake, shake my sillies out,
And wiggle my waggles away!

Verses: Clap my crazies… Jump my jiggles… Yawn my sleepies… finish with a fast shake your sillies!

Goodbye Song: We Wave Goodbye Like This
We wave goodbye like this,
We wave goodbye like this,
To all our friends at storytime,
We wave goodbye like this!

See you there!
