HCPL - Storytime

This week’s storytime we are celebrating Black History Month! Here are some wonderful books we might read in storytime:

A Library by Nikki Giovanni, illustrated by Erin K. Robinson

You Matter by Christian Robinson

What Does Brown Mean to You? by Ron Grady

I Am Enough by Grace Byers, pictures by Keturah A. Bobo

Here are some songs and/or rhymes we might do in storytime:

Song: Head and Shoulder by Ella Jenkins (known as The First Lady of Children’s Folk Song)

Flannel: Twinkle Twinkle Traffic Light (invented by Garrett Morgan in 1923 after witnessing an accident
Twinkle twinkle traffic light,
On the corner shining bright.
Red means, “Stop.” Green means, “Go.”
Yellow means, “Go  very slow.”
Twinkle twinkle traffic light,
On the corner shining bright.

Rhyme: Peanut Butter and Jelly (Although he did not invent peanut butter [the Incans did], George Washington Carver made more than 300 different uses for peanuts like shampoo, paper, soap, and glue!)
Peanut butter, peanut butter, jelly, jelly.
First you take the peanuts, and you crush ‘em, crush ‘em.
Peanut butter, peanut butter, jelly, jelly.
Then you take the grapes, and you squish ‘em, squish ‘em.
Peanut butter, peanut butter, jelly, jelly.
Then you take the bread and you spread it, spread it.
Peanut butter, peanut butter, jelly, jelly.
Then you make a sandwich, and you eat it, eat it!
Peanut butter, peanut butter, jelly, jelly.

Song: Super Shaker Song by Culture Queen (a Children’s musician and arts manager from Baltimore, Maryland)

See you there!
