This week we are celebrating Native American Heritage Month! Here are some wonderful books written and/or illustrated by Native authors and artists we might read in storytime:

Fry Bread Written by Kevin Noble Maillard, Illustrated by Juana Martinez-Neal

We All Play: Kimêtawânaw by Julie Flett

In My Anaana’s Amautik by Nadia Sammurtok, Illustrated by Lenny Lishchenko

You Hold Me Up by Monique Gray Smith and Danielle Daniel

My Heart Fills With Happiness by Monique Gray Smith, illustrations by Julie Flett

Here are some songs and/or rhymes we might do in storytime:

Rhyme: Mix a Pancake & Fry Bread (Jbrary)
Mix a pancake,                      (Stir, stir, stir)
Stir a pancake,
Pop it in a pan,                      (Clap hands together)
Fry a pancake,                       (Pretend to hold a pan)
Toss a pancake                      (Pretend to toss)
Catch it if you can!               (Catch it!)

*Repeat with fry bread instead of pancake!

Song: The More We Get Together
The more we get together, together, together,  (sign: more, together)
The more we get together the happier we’ll be, (sign: more, together, happy)
‘Cause your friends are my friends,                         (sign: your, friends, my)
And my friends are your friends                                (sign: my, friends, your)
The more we get together the happier we’ll be.  (sign: more, together)

Song: Bananas Unite!
Peel bananas, peel, peel bananas,
Peel bananas, peel, peel bananas,
Chop bananas, chop, chop bananas,
Chop bananas, chop, chop bananas,
Mash bananas, mash, mash bananas,
Mash bananas, mash, mash bananas,
Eat bananas, eat, eat bananas,
Eat bananas, eat, eat bananas,
Go bananas, go, go bananas!
Go bananas, go, go bananas!
Bananas unite!

See you there!
