Picture Circus
This year our children’s services coordinator, Ms. Rosa, hopes to fulfill a dream that she’s had for some time. She and Nick Ramos, a local graphic artist, have been working on a project they’re calling Picture Circus. (Ms. Rosa does circus, Mr. Ramos does pictures.) It’s going to be a festival on April 30 to celebrate the international holiday El día de los niños/El día de los libros (day of the children/day of the books). Día, as folks in the know now call it for short, originated in Mexico in 1925 as Día del niño, a day to honor the importance of children in society and to endorse their well-being. In the mid-1990s librarians in the American Southwest began talking of connecting the day of the child with the day of the book and in 1997 the states of Texas and New Mexico officially began celebrating El día de los niños/El día de los libros.
The Georgetown Public Library’s celebration of Día, on April 30, begins at 10 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m. Come to enjoy the aerial (trapeze) artists, face painters, clowns, a juggler, and balloon artists. Throughout the day, children’s book illustrators will be demonstrating their art. You’ll be able to watch them work, ask questions, and learn about how art and text come together to create successful children’s books. It’s all free and open to the public thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the Georgetown Public Library.
